DESIGN AND ILLUSTRATION
Once we have a plan of what we are to create, we start with the act of creating
3 dimensional geometry in modeling software. A variety of tools are implemented
by the artist to shape a mathematical list of numbers in the x, y, and z
directions. We spin, clone, twist, twirl, push, pull, add and subtract to
create an object which has shape and contour. As we sculpt, we move and
rotate this object to scrutinize it from every angle, just as if we were
holding it in our hands.
Once the shape is right,
we turn to the color or surfacing phase. The requirements of the material
of the shape, direct our efforts. Color, shininess, translucency, surface
and texture are all under our control. We can make our object appear to
be made of most any material, real or otherwise.
As soon as the artist has
the model taking on the appearance of texture, volume, and mass, he can
turn to lighting his creation. He control light as if it came from the
sun, a studio light, neon, candle, or a nuclear explosion. At this point
the model is placed in an environment which could be a simple as floating
in space or as complex as a subassembly of the space shuttle. The model
can be manipulated to resemble a photograph, a cartoon, or some yet to
be discovered style.
The final step is to compose
the imagery as if we were viewing it through a camera. The artist moves
the camera around the model and views it from every conceivable position
and angle. Aperture, focus and lens angle are set, just like in photography.
Once he has a composition fitting the project, he snaps or renders a picture
to film, file or print.
